That’s a wrap: Local product Daniel Murphy retires from baseball

Murphy, who played at Englewood High School and Jacksonville University, told SportsNet New York on Friday that he was retiring. “This is a beautiful game, and I really just feel humbled and blessed that it let me jump on the ride for a little bit,” Murphy told SNY. Murphy played seven seasons for the Mets and will be remembered the most for his time there, including a torrid postseason in 2015. But his best season came in 2016 with the Nationals where Murphy hit a career-highs in batting average (.347), home runs (25) and RBI (104).

Giants spoil Bumgarner's return to SF, beat Diamondbacks 4-3

His 119 wins are third-most in San Francisco history and his 1,794 strikeouts rank second. Joey Bart and Mauricio Dubn added consecutive RBI triples in the sixth to give San Francisco a 4-1 lead. San Francisco improved to 6-2 against the Diamondbacks this season, outscoring them 39-23. He went 2-1 with a 4.11 ERA in three starts against San Francisco last season.

Dodgers set NL homer mark for month at 57, beat Rangers 7-2

Bellinger's two-run homer gave the Dodgers 57 long balls in August after solo shots from Corey Seager and Will Smith, and LA beat the Texas Rangers 7-2 on Sunday. They now have 12 straight series victories to start the season tied for the fifth-best season-opening run since 1969. The 1990 Cincinnati Reds have the record with 17 straight series wins to start the year. ... 2B Rougned Odor missed his sixth straight game with a right eye infection.

Northeast Astronomy Forum 2020 goes virtual for coronavirus countermeasure

(Image credit: Space.com)The Northeast Astronomy Forum (NEAF), which normally brings thousands of people to the Rockland Community College in Suffern, New York for a weekend each year, will switch to a virtual-only meeting in April as a novel coronavirus countermeasure. "NEAF The Virtual Experience will be held one day only on April 4," the Rockland Astronomy Club, which organizes the annual event, said in a statement. "Attendees to this historic virtual online event will experience product demonstrations, door prizes, and amazing speakers that have made the Northeast Astronomy Forum legendary."

As with a solar eclipse, it is not safe to look directly at the sun without special protective eyewear not just regular sunglasses. NASA broadcast the transit as seen from the orbiting Solar Dynamics Observatory, with only a brief lag.
