Biden invites Russia, China to first global climate talks

The president is seeking to revive a U.S.-convened forum of the worldโ€™s major economies on climate that George W. Bush and Barack Obama both used and Donald Trump let languish. The Biden administration intentionally looked beyond its international partners for the summit, reaching out to key leaders for what it said would sometimes be tough talks on climate matters, an administration official said. Another Biden administration official said the U.S. is still deciding how far the administration will go in setting a more ambitious U.S. emissions target. AdClimate scientists and climate policy experts largely welcomed Biden's international overture on climate negotiations, especially the outreach to China. Biden and other administration officials have been stressing U.S. climate intentions during early one-on-one talks with foreign leaders, and Biden climate envoy John Kerry has focused on diplomacy abroad to galvanize climate efforts.

UN: Huge changes in society needed to keep nature, Earth OK

A United Nations report released on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2021 says humans are making Earth a broken and increasingly unlivable planet through climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. (AP Photo/Charlie Riedel)Humans are making Earth a broken and increasingly unlivable planet through climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. So the world must make dramatic changes to society, economics and daily life, a new United Nations report says. And many of the solutions, such as eliminating fossil fuel use, combat multiple problems including climate change and pollution, she said. The report also tells nations to value nature in addition to the gross domestic product when calculating how an economy is doing.

Sheriff: Glee star Naya Rivera saved son before drowning

She must have mustered enough energy to get her son back on the boat, but not enough to save herself, Ventura County Sheriff Bill Ayub said at a news conference. The mother and son had gone swimming, which was permitted in that part of the lake, Ayub said. Another co-star, Mark Salling, who Rivera dated at one point, killed himself in 2018 at age 35 after pleading guilty to child pornography charges. Surveillance video showed the mother and son parking and renting the boat at about 1 p.m. on July 8. The boy, Riveras son from her marriage to actor Ryan Dorsey, was safe and healthy and quickly reunited with family members after he was found, authorities said.
