A local children’s author had the opportunity to read and share insight on her book “Mike The Friendly Firefighter” during a literacy event at the Jacksonville Public Library on Saturday.

Saturday was a day of celebration for author Brittany Jones after she officially launched her first book of a children’s book series.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Preventing shootings and murders is the goal of Cure Violence as it says Jacksonville's Eastside and Northside neighborhoods are becoming more peaceful. Cure Violence Program Implementation Director Damien Cook said both areas saw nearly a month without any shootings or killings. For last 90 days, Cure Violence -- led by the Noah's Ark Project, outreach workers and violence interrupters -- has been working on the Eastside in Zone 1 -- a community that has seen heartbreaking violence. Cure Violence records show the teams have put in more than 1,580 hours of community service on the Northside. Organizers with Cure Violence want the community to know that Cure Violence is not sharing information with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

The Coast Guard said seven vessels had been waiting offshore to come into port since the Golden Ray overturned. According to the Coast Guard, 50 vessels come in and out of the Port of Brunswick every month. The Coast Guard also said the Golden Ray has approximately 300,000 gallons of fuel. A safety zone has been established a half-mile mile around the Golden Ray. The Coast Guard hopes to shrink the zone Thursday, as authorities are making progress.
