Nearly five years after the United States men’s national soccer team famously blew a spot in the 2018 World Cup by losing to a vastly inferior Trinidad and Tobago squad in October of 2017 in the final game of qualifying, the moment of redemption has finally arrived for the Americans.

Among 15 players at RB Leipzig who headed last week to national teams, Tyler Adams tried to explain to teammates what it's like playing in CONCACAF, which allows subpar fields in outdated stadiums that elite leagues don't tolerate. “They sit there and laugh because they have to play against England, France, obviously some great countries with a lot of talent,” the American midfielder said. And then there were 8: CONCACAF hexagonal becomes octagonal
NEW YORK CONCACAF is changing its World Cup qualifying hexagonal to an octagonal in response to the coronavirus pandemic and delaying the start until next June. CONCACAFs other 30 nations will compete for three additional spots in the final round. By staying with a large total of teams in the final round, CONCACAF ensured two high-profile, lucrative qualifiers between the U.S. and Mexico. Teams not in the hexagonal would have competed for the right to represent CONCACAF in an intercontinental playoff. The top three teams in the octagonal qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and the fourth-place nation advances to an intercontinental playoff in June 2022.

House bill would block 2026 Men's World Cup funding until women's team receives 'equitable wages'
The GOALS Act would block federal funding for the 2026 Men's World Cup which will be hosted, jointly, by Canada, Mexico and the U.S. until the U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) pays the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team (USWNT) "fair and equitable wages." The World Cup is over, but the fight for equal compensation on the field continues. Earlier in July, West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin introduced a bill that would ban federal funding for the 2026 Men's World Cup until the USSF pays the women's and men's team equitably. U.S. viewership of the 2019 Women's World Cup final was 22% higher than the 2018 men's final, according to a statement from Fox Sports. The USWNT's lawsuit states that the Women's National Team Player's Association (WNTPA) has proposed a revenue-sharing model, describing a proposal that would tie player compensation to revenue generated by the women's national team for USSF, which the men's national team supports.cnbc.com
