Presley's Graceland is preparing to host visitors and offer in-person events for Elvis Week from Aug. 11 through Aug. 17. The event will feature appearances by celebrities and musicians, live concerts, panel discussions, parties, bus excursions and the Elvis Presley tribute artist contest, officials with Elvis Presley Enterprises said. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, Elvis Week events were mostly held online last year.

Graceland said the two-hour guided tours will take virtual visitors into Presley's former Memphis home, which has been turned into a museum, and through the Meditation Garden, where he is buried. Graceland was closed for several weeks last year and is now open for limited-capacity, in-person tours.

Cobain 'MTV Unplugged' guitar sells for sky-high $6 million

The 1959 Martin D-18E that Cobain played in the band's rare acoustic performance and subsequent live album was sold to Australian Peter Freedman, owner of Røde Microphones, at the Music Icons event run by Julien's Auctions in Beverly Hills, California. The bids opened at $1 million for the sale that ended up breaking several world records. Cobain used it to play tunes including “About a Girl” and “All Apologies” at the Nov. 18, 1993, show in New York that came less than five months before the singer and songwriter died at age 27. A day earlier at the same auction event, a custom guitar played by Prince at the height of his stardom in the 1980s and 1990s sold for $563,500, a small sum compared with the Cobain guitar but well over the $100,000 to $200,000 it was expected to fetch.
Amid pandemic, scores of US Catholic schools face closure

Donoghue said many families have recently lost jobs and feel they can no longer pay tuitions averaging nearly $5,000 for elementary schools and more than $11,000 for high schools. They offered to buy the elementary school building and the high school sports fields and operate a private school independently of the diocese, but that was rejected.
Music fest, barbecue contest in Memphis are rescheduled
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Tourism officials in Memphis, Tennessee, say the Beale Street Music Festival and the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest have been rescheduled for the fall after they were postponed by the new coronavirus outbreak. Memphis in May officials said in a statement Saturday that the barbecue cooking competition has been reset for Sept. 30 through Oct. 3. The music festival will now be held Oct. 16 through Oct. 18. They attract music fans and barbecue cooking teams from around the world. The Memphis tourist attraction is centered on the life and career of the late rock n' roll icon.
Tom Hanks says he has the 'blahs' but no fever in isolation
CANBERRA – Tom Hanks says he feels the “blahs” but has no fever as he and wife Rita Wilson remain in isolation in an Australian residence after being discharged from a hospital following their coronavirus diagnosis. He had met Wilson at the Sydney Opera House on March 7 and again at Nine Network’s Sydney studio two days later. Authorities said last week that several contacts Hanks and Wilson had in Australia were being traced, but no other results of those efforts have been made public. Sydney Nova 96.9 radio hosts Ryan Fitzgerald and Michael Wipfli are in home isolation and were tested on Monday after news of Wilkins' infection. Wilkins’ son Christian Wilkins was also tested because he spent the night of March 10 in his father’s Sydney home.
Australian TV journalist who met with Rita Wilson has virus
CANBERRA – An Australian television journalist said Monday he has the new coronavirus and assumes he contracted it while meeting with actress-singer Rita Wilson in Sydney. Wilson and her husband Tom Hanks have been isolated in an Australian hospital since they were both diagnosed with COVID-19 on March 12. Hanks had been working on a film in Australia and Wilson had concert performances in the country before they were diagnosed. Nine Network entertainment editor Richard Wilkins said he was tested because he met Wilson at the Sydney Opera House on March 7 and again at Nine’s Sydney studio on March 9. Wilkins’ son Christian Wilkins was tested because he spent the night of March 10 in his father’s Sydney home.

Cellphone alerts helped Tennessee couple escape to basement
Tornadoes that struck Tennessee early Tuesday killed at least 24 with an unspecified number of people still missing. State emergency officials said 24 people died when fast-moving storms crossed Tennessee early Tuesday. Eighteen of them, including five pre-teen children, died in Putnam County, some 80 miles (130 kilometers) east of Nashville. The twister that hit Putnam County was classified EF-4, the second strongest, with winds of 175 mph, the National Weather Service said Wednesday evening. The number of people unaccounted for dropped to three from 21, Putnam County Mayor Randy Porter said late Wednesday afternoon.

Barry Coe, 'Peyton Place' and 'Bonanza' actor, dead at 84

(CNN) - Golden Globe-winning actor Barry Coe, who had roles in "Bonanza" and films like 1957's "Petyon Place" and "Jaws 2," died last month after a battle with myelodysplastic syndrome, according to an obituary. Actor Ryan O'Neal would go on to play Coe's role from the film, a character named Rodney Harrigton, in the TV series. Three years later, Coe picked up a Golden Globe award for most promising male newcomer for his role in "A Private Affair." His other credits include roles in films like Elvis Presley's "Love Me Tender" and "One Foot in Hell" and a TV series called "Follow the Sun," which aired for one season.
