Dollar Tree is selling Family Dollar to a pair of private equity firms in a deal worth approximately $1 billion after unsuccessfully trying to incorporate it into its business for a decade.

Discount retailer Dollar Tree says it’s looking at strategic options for the Family Dollar stores that it owns, including a possible sale of the segment.

An Arlington Family Dollar is one of Jacksonvlle’s 48 stores closing its doors as the store’s parent company, Dollar Tree, prepares to shut down 1,000 stores nationwide.

Dollar Tree will close nearly 1,000 stores and swung to a surprise fourth quarter loss as the discount retailer took a related $1.07 billion goodwill impairment charge.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Theft at one Northwest Jacksonville store has become such a common occurrence that employees said they have gone as far as to limit the number of people who can enter the business at one time. People started talking about the policy after a photo was shared to the “Only in Duval” group on Facebook. “It’s really geared toward the students who are getting out of school and when they come to the store after school, they are taking things out of the store and not paying," said Jacksonville resident Janet Jordan. But theft is not the only crime that has affected the Northwest Jacksonville area. Shirley Blair, who has lived in Jacksonville her entire life, said it didn’t use to be like this.

A company spokesperson sent ABC Action News a brief statement on Friday after we asked about the price inflation. Doyel also notified the state's price gouging hotline and says she spoke directly with Florida AG Ashley Moody. Individuals or businesses found guilty of price gouging could face fines up to $1,000 per violation, or up to a maximum of $25,000 per day. Yet a wave of cities and towns have passed laws curbing the expansion of Dollar General and Dollar Tree, which bought Family Dollar in 2015. Advocates of tighter controls on dollar stores say the big chains intentionally cluster multiple stores in low-income areas. Dollar General and its dollar store rivals mostly sell snacks, drinks, canned foods and vegetables, household supplies and personal care products at rock-bottom prices. Dollar stores can open quickly in new areas because they are small and have lower operating costs than grocery stores. Family-owned grocery stores operate at razor-thin profit margins and dollar stores can pressure them with lower prices, experts say.

KINGSLAND, Ga. – A man was arrested after an armed robbery was reported Saturday night at a Family Dollar store, the Kingsland Police Department said. Anthony White, 45, of Kingsland, is charged with armed robbery and kidnapping. Officers responded about 10:25 p.m. to a report of an armed robbery at the Family Dollar on South Lee Street. The Camden County Sheriff's Office Emergency Response Team was called and tried to make contact with the person inside the store. After several hours, police said, the Emergency Response Team decided to enter the store, and took the man into custody without incident.
