Jim Loewenberg, prolific Chicago developer who backed Lakeshore East and its Aqua and Vista towers, dies at 86

Both towers were principally designed by Chicago architect Jeanne Gang and her firm Studio Gang. Gang and Loewenberg teamed up in 2004 when Loewenberg was seated next to Gang, then a relative unknown, at a Harvard Club dinner where Los Angeles architect Frank Gehry was the speaker. Loewenberg was looking for a young architect who would produce an out-of-the-box design for a tall tower at Lakeshore East. In Gang, he found one.

Famed architect Paul Williams' archive goes to Getty, USC

Paul Williams was a trailblazing architect whose long career helped shape Los Angeles and Southern California. The Los Angeles County Courthouse, Los Angeles International Airport and First African Methodist Church were among the projects he led or worked on. He was the first African American member of the American Institute of Architects, its first African American Fellow and the first African American recipient of the institute's Gold Medal, its highest honor. Born in Los Angeles in 1894, Williams was orphaned following the death of his father at age 2 and his mother at age 4. The archives will be a central feature of the USC Center for Architecture + City Design and the African American Art History Initiative at Getty.

Tesla fell 11% after reporting a loss that was wider than analysts expected in its second-quarter earnings. The electric vehicle company reported adjusted earnings per share of $1.12 on revenues of $6.35 billion. Ford dropped more than 6% after the auto company released mixed second-quarter earnings. PayPal fell by as much as 6% after the payments company's second-quarter revenues missed estimates. The company reported revenues of $4.31 billion, below the $4.33 billion analysts expected, according to Refinitiv.
