Rihanna and Greta Thunberg back farmers locked in a protest standoff with India's government

Singer Rihanna and environmental activist Greta Thunberg have used their huge followings on social media to shine a spotlight on the farmers' protest. Rihanna shared a news article on the Indian government blocking internet services at three farmer protest sites on Delhi's borders and asked, "why aren't we talking about this?! "We stand in solidarity with the farmer protests in India," Thunberg wrote on her Twitter account. Security officers, in the foreground, push back people shouting slogans during a demonstration held in support to farmers who have been on a months-long protest, in New Delhi, India, February 3, 2021. "Incitement to genocide is not freedom of speech; It is a threat to law and order," the government has insisted in its warnings to the social media company to comply.

Key departures signal agriculture shakeup for Capitol Hill

MINNEAPOLIS – The reelection defeat of U.S. House Agriculture Committee Chairman Collin Peterson in Minnesota and some key retirements mean a shakeup is coming for the industry on Capitol Hill, with power likely to shift from the Midwest to the South and the coasts. Both the House and Senate agriculture committees will get new chairs, and there will be a new top Republican on the House panel. Fischbach plans to seek a seat on the Agriculture Committee, but she'll have to draw heavily on her legislative skills to have much of an influence as a freshman in the minority party. Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow of Michigan is the only one of the top four agriculture committee leaders returning in 2021. Neither Roberts nor Rep. Michael Conaway of Texas, the ranking Republican in the House committee, sought reelection.

Police: Home in California backyard shooting was targeted

Authorities did not identify any suspects or motive for the Sunday evening attack at the home of a Hmong family. All the shooting occurred outside, and none of the women and children inside were harmed. Police were investigating whether the shooting was connected to a recent "disturbance" involving some of the people at the party, Hall said. It was the third mass shooting in four days in California. Concepcion Soto, who has lived next door to the home where the shooting occurred for 12 years, said the family there was always friendly.
