The film won the Venice Film Festival's top prize and critics have raved about Phoenix's performance, which has led to Oscar talk.

(CNN) - "Joker" broke box office records this weekend, even as its controversial depiction of violence made some potential theatergoers anxious. "Joker" is the largest opening for Warner Bros. this year as well as one of the biggest openings for a R-rated film. "Warner Bros. believes that one of the functions of storytelling is to provoke difficult conversations around complex issues," a statement from the studio said last month. The record-setting box office performance from "Joker" is great news for Hollywood, which could use more hits as the year goes on. The domestic box office is down roughly 5% compared to last year, but there are many potential blockbusters still on the schedule.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The San Marco Theater will not be showing the movie, Joker. The owners have apparently changed their minds about showing the controversial flick. Workers put up a sign notifying ticket holders that all upcoming showtimes of Joker will be canceled due to negative attention the movie has received nationally. All tickets already purchased will be refunded and complimentary passes for future shows will be provided free. The sign goes on to apologize to San Marco Theater customers for the inconvenience.

A California movie theater showing the film Joker shuttered its doors after receiving what police called a credible threat, officials said. Moviegoers planning to see Joaquin Phoenixs controversial film at the Century Huntington Beach and XD Theater in the Bella Terra shopping center Thursday instead found a closed theater surrounded by police. We took the threat seriously, and were investigating, Officer Angela Bennett, a spokeswoman for the Huntington Beach Police Department, told the Times. The FBI and U.S. Army also issued internal warnings about possible threats related to the movie. In 2012, a gunman killed 12 people after opening fire during a screening of the Batman film The Dark Knight Rises at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado.

(CNN) - The FBI and Department of Homeland Security are warning law enforcement ahead of this weekend's premiere of the movie "Joker" after a number of threats were posted online calling for mass shootings at showings of the movie. "The FBI, DHS, and (National Counterterrorism Center) remain concerned that the volume of threatening language may lead to lone offender violence," the bulletin says. Concern from law enforcement has been growing in recent weeks around the movie's premiere. Authorities report in the intelligence bulletin that some of the recent threats surrounding "Joker" referenced the Aurora shooting and say they are concerned potential shooters could use that shooting as inspiration. Incels are responsible for killing at least 27 people since 2014 in the United States and Canada, the FBI said in the bulletin.

MIAMI – A Miami-Dade County man whose green hair and face tattoos resemble the look of Batman's nemesis the Joker was arrested Tuesday after pointing a gun at passing vehicles, police said. According to a Miami-Dade police report, police were alerted about a man with green hair and tattoos on his face standing at the corner of Southwest 104th Street and Hammocks Boulevard, pointing a gun at passing vehicles. When the officer asked the man, later identified as Sullivan, if he was armed, Sullivan said he had a gun in his pocket, police said. Sullivan told the officer that he didn't have a permit because it was too expensive, police said. Among the man's face tattoos are the words "Joker" stenciled across his forehead, next to a Batman logo with profanity scribbled within it.
