For GOP, national party line trumps bringing home the bacon

Iowa’s 2nd congressional district has the dubious distinction of having the second-most structurally deficient bridges in the country.

For GOP, national party line trumps bringing home the bacon

Davenport's 81-year-old Centennial Bridge across the Mississippi River creaks under the weight of tens of thousands of cars and trucks every day. The tally gives Iowa's 2nd congressional district the dubious distinction of having the second-most troubled bridges in the country. Miller-Meeks objected to majority Democrats' handling of the bill, never mentioning its contents, a common refrain from the minority that overwhelmingly opposed it.

Democrat Rita Hart withdraws challenge in Iowa congressional race

Democrat Rita Hart has withdrawn her challenge to Republican Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks' victory in Iowa's second congressional district. The House had been reviewing Hart's case, after Hart contested Miller-Meeks' six-vote victory out of nearly 400,000 votes cast in the race. Miller-Meeks' victory has already been certified by state officials. The initial canvass of the race found Miller-Meeks defeated Hart by 47 votes. She also argued that the "unfair" approach would have been to refuse to seat Miller-Meeks at the start of the term, something she said many colleagues encouraged her to do.

House continues investigation challenging Republican win in Iowa

A challenge to Iowa's 2nd congressional district race continues in the House, as Democrat Rita Hart challenges Republican Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks' six-vote victory. Raffensperger's letter is notable since he is the top elections official in Georgia, ahead of Congress' counting of electoral votes, Mr. Trump told Raffensperger he needed to find 11,780 votes, one more than the number of votes Mr. Trump trailed President Biden. In the hourlong call, Mr. Trump also falsely claimed that "close to 5,000" dead people voted in the election. The House Committee on Administration, which has voted to postpone a request from Miller-Meeks to dismiss the case, will now review the briefs from both campaigns. The House, based on the committee's review, could affirm Miller-Meeks' win, order a recount, or say, for instance, Iowa election officials improperly handled ballots and Hart should have the seat instead.

Pelosi likely speaker again, but might require high-wire act

WASHINGTON – There's little doubt that Nancy Pelosi will be reelected House speaker when the new Congress convenes Sunday. It could take a high-wire act for her to get there, largely thanks to the pandemic. “Yeah, I do,” Pelosi told a reporter this week when asked if she had the votes wrapped up. Miller-Meeks is certain to vote against Pelosi to be speaker. “It’s extraordinarily tricky” for Pelosi, said Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., an 18-year congressional veteran.

How Democrats came up short in bid to expand House majority

"It's the Trump factor," Nearmyer said about how Democrats lost House seats. (AP Photo/Charlie Neibergall)MONROE, Iowa – This swath of southeast Iowa isn't supposed to be a nailbiter for Democrats. Instead, it appears Democrats made a serious miscalculation in assuming their antipathy toward Trump would fuel victories across the country. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which supports the party's House candidates, is beginning a “deep dive” examination into what happened. Voters for months watched Republican ads featuring unrest with narrators ominously attacking Democrats as anti-police, often with little response.

More GOP women seeking office, but winning still in question

More Republican women than ever are seeking House seats this year after the 2018 election further diminished their limited ranks in Congress. The next test comes Tuesday in states such as Indiana, where Republican Rep. Susan Brooks one of 13 Republican women in the House is retiring. Republican women have always had a tougher time winning office. Groups that back GOP women have nowhere near the resources of organizations such as EMILYs List, which has existed much longer and has been a game changer for Democratic women. Hinson is running in the district represented by Democratic Rep. Abby Finkenauer, who is seeking a second term, and Miller-Meeks is seeking a seat vacated by Democratic Rep. Dave Loebsack.
