Empty seats make for some strange sights, sounds in NFL

All the vacant seats at Gillette Stadium had Patriots star Julian Edelman reminiscing about his time in junior college. That gave viewers a more natural audio experience and at least those streaming or watching the game could hear the referee explain calls. It’s just super quiet in there.” The silence Sunday was especially eerie when a player got injured and the piped-in crowd noise was cut off “and it was just crazy quiet,” he added. “Honestly, it reminded me of the times I was back at the College of San Mateo, my junior college,” Edelman said. That energy and getting to go out there in front of 75,000 people is amazing, but it ... brought me back at least to high school, junior college, college.

So, to see Gore on Sunday at 37 facing the franchise with which he spent his first 10 NFL seasons might amaze some.

Rams open SoFi Stadium in style with 20-17 win over Cowboys

Dak Prescott passed for 266 yards and a touchdown, but Dallas managed three points on its six drives in the second half. The opening of Rams owner Stan Kroenke's $5 billion stadium project was a historic night for the Los Angeles area, albeit one that should have been much more festive. Elliott tied it early in the second quarter with a 19-yard TD catch during which he ran through most of the Los Angeles defense. Van Jefferson's first career reception was a beautiful 31-yard grab in the second quarter, but it was the promising Rams rookie's only reception. Right tackle Cam Erving and tight end Blake Jarwin both didn't return from knee injuries in the second quarter.

Cowboys' Prescott acknowledges mental struggles of offseason

Prescott acknowledged the cause of Jace Prescott's death for the first time in a recent TV interview set to air this weekend. Dak Prescott, the youngest, said he knew Jace Prescott bore the greatest burden as their mom's primary caregiver while she battled cancer. Jace Prescott died at 31 in the southeast Texas city of Orange in April. Prescott said those leadership tendencies are enhanced when someone is able to acknowledge their own difficulties with mental health. “I mean, obviously tears and tears and tears,” Dak Prescott said.

Cowboys' Prescott has eye on present without long-term deal

Dak Prescott stuck with his virtual hiatus trying to get a long-term contract that never came during the offseason. Im not a guy that looks at my future to be honest, Prescott said Wednesday, two days before the first practice of training camp for the Cowboys. He was an almost instant star with the Cowboys, winning 2016 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year as a fourth-round pick who replaced injured 10-year starter Tony Romo during his first preseason. The Cowboys made the hotel available to their players, and Prescott estimated 90% of them had essentially agreed to create their own bubble. The Cowboys cleared their COVID-19 reserve list early this week by activating WR Jon'Vea Johnson and CB Saivion Smith.

NFL facing unending series of questions, uncertain answers

Perhaps the biggest headlines Brady drew recently came when he defied players' union recommendations to cease informal practices with teammates as a coronavirus precaution. (Chris Urso/Tampa Bay Times via AP, File)In seven weeks, the NFL expects to kick off its 101st season with the Super Bowl champion Chiefs hosting Houston. Still set on conducting a somewhat normal training camp, though without any preseason games, and then opening the regular season on time, the NFL pushes onward. We could have a ton of social distance, more than we have with our football team, Chiefs coach Andy Reid says. Perhaps the biggest headlines Brady drew recently came when he defied players' union recommendations to cease informal practices with teammates as a coronavirus precaution.

Cowboys' Prescott signs $31M tag, still time for longer deal

Dak Prescott plans to be at training camp with the Dallas Cowboys, if and when it starts, on the richest one-year contract in franchise history. Prescott signed his $31.4 million tender under the franchise tag Monday. By signing the offer under the franchise tag, Prescott is obligated to report for all team activities or risk being fined. The two-time Pro Bowler started his rookie season third on the depth chart after getting drafted in the fourth round out of Mississippi State. Despite missing the playoffs again last season, Prescott had career bests with 4,902 yards passing and 30 touchdowns.

Aldon Smith says he's better man, seeks revival with Cowboys

Dallas Cowboys defensive end Aldon Smith had already been suspended from the NFL several years when his ailing grandmother implored him to change his life before she died of complications from Lou Gehrig's disease. Before that, Smith was a rising star in San Francisco when his legal troubles began in 2013. The Raiders still had his contractual rights two years ago before releasing Smith after San Francisco police issued an arrest warrant over allegations of domestic violence. His path to Dallas is special and unique, said McCarthy, who faced Smith and San Francisco four times in a span of two seasons as Green Bay's coach. San Francisco reached the Super Bowl in his second season, losing to Baltimore, and played in the NFC championship game each of his first three years.

McCarthy prepping for Cowboys job from old home of Green Bay

Mike McCarthy has spent most of his first offseason as coach of the Dallas Cowboys at home in Green Bay. Meantime, McCarthy sure is ready to get back to the Cowboys' facility north of Dallas, particularly because live offseason practices would be happening now under normal circumstances. I have been with my family the whole time, except for maybe the first 10 days of the pandemic, McCarthy said Wednesday in his first teleconference with reporters since the draft. After a year away from the game following his firing in Green Bay, McCarthy replaced most of the coaching staff and geared up for the draft. After winning a Super Bowl with Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay nine years ago, McCarthy knows the development of his relationship with Prescott is among the highest priorities.
