"It's time that the parks share some of the wealth that comes to Niagara Falls, with the city that hosts the Falls itself," said Councilman Kenny Tompkins (R). This idea comes after Mayor Paul Dyster announced that the city has a budget deficit. Tourists say this wouldn't stop them from visiting the Falls.
Excelsior! New York license plate design shows more than Manhattan
The winning design features Niagara Falls and the Statue of Liberty. (CNN) - There's more to New York state than New York City. That could be the message behind the most popular design in a new license plate contest. On Friday, the state announced the wide-ranging winner, which features not only the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline, but also Niagara Falls, a mountain range, and a Long Island lighthouse. All the finalists used blue and gold, an outline of the state, and the word "Excelsior," which is the Latin motto on the state seal that means "Ever upward."
Man swept over Niagara Falls survives
John Normile/Getty Images(CNN) - A man was injured Tuesday morning after being swept over one of the waterfalls that makes up Niagara Falls, police said. Police in Ontario, Canada, were responding to a call of a man in crisis at Horseshoe Falls when the man climbed over a retaining wall, Niagara Parks Police tweeted. The man was swept over the rim and fell 188 feet into the Lower Niagara River. According to the Niagara Parks website, the plunge pool is usually 100 feet deep. Horseshoe Falls is the largest of the three waterfalls that form Niagara Falls.
