NFL won't be cutting in line for coronavirus vaccine

(AP Photo/Adrian Kraus)The NFL wonโ€™t be cutting in line to get the coronavirus vaccine. โ€œNo one should be thinking about the vaccine going anywhere other than our first responders and the most vulnerable people right now,โ€ said DeMaurice Smith, executive director of the NFL Players Association. โ€œThe rollout of the vaccine is going to be driven by public health concerns and what medical and government officials determine to be the most efficacious for risk reduction across society as a whole. Lock returns to practice, apologizes again for COVID-19 slip

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. โ€“ Many viewers cringed at Denverโ€™s ugly loss to the Saints behind a rookie receiver pressed into duty because every Broncos quarterback was barred by the NFL over coronavirus concerns. A three-year starter at Vanderbilt, Shurmur spent last season on the Chiefsโ€™ practice squad. After Driskelโ€™s positive test, a league investigation deemed Lock, Rypien and Bortles as high-risk close contacts and ordered them into quarantine Saturday. Hinton returned to catching passes, not throwing them, when he went back to the practice squad Wednesday. Miller has made it his goal to play this season after a freak ankle injury six days before the opener.

Broncos activate 3 QBs following COVID-19 rules violations

Denver Broncos quarterback Kendall Hinton (2) is hit after the throw by New Orleans Saints defensive end Marcus Davenport during the first half of an NFL football game, Sunday, Nov. 29, 2020, in Denver. The NFL denied Denver's request to push the Saints game back 48 hours, which would have allowed their QBs to return to action. So they turned to Hinton, a former quarterback in college, and sprinkled in some direct snaps to running backs Royce Freeman and Phillip Lindsay. Lock, Rypien and Bortles were removed from the reserve/COVID-19 list after testing negative Tuesday for a fifth consecutive day. Lock and Rypien return to the Broncosโ€™ active roster, and Bortles returns to the practice squad.

Mahomes piles up big numbers at Arrowhead - on Election Day

Patrick Mahomes piled up some very big numbers at Arrowhead Stadium last week. Five days before throwing for four touchdowns and nearly 400 yards in the Kansas City Chiefsโ€™ 33-31 victory over the Carolina Panthers, Mahomes helped turn his home stadium into a giant polling place on Election Day. Chiefs president Mark Donovan and head coach Andy Reid were among the first to vote at Arrowhead on Tuesday. โ€œDonโ€™t be mad at paying customers when the product stinks and they are upset about what theyโ€™re watching. Saints cornerback Janoris Jenkins jumped on Wims and soon players from both teams rushed in to break up the ruckus. Wims emerged from the pileup clapping and smiling as he was ejected and escorted to his locker room.

Chiefs quarterback Mahomes continues to progress with time

Chiefs quarterback Mahomes continues to progress with time

โ€“ The regression was almost inevitable after Patrick Mahomes put up record-setting numbers during his first season as the Kansas City Chiefs' starting quarterback, highlighted by nearly 5,100 yards passing and 50 touchdown throws. He's doing a great job there,โ€ Chiefs coach Andy Reid said this week, "and I'm really proud of the progress he's made in so many areas. โ€œIt seems like every year we're getting a new scheme or a new way defenses are going about playing us,โ€ Mahomes said. But our team does a great job making adjustments.โ€Or rather, Mahomes does a great job of making adjustments. "He's had an opportunity to sit in on some zoom meetings (while going through COVID-19 testing)," Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy said.

Broncos running backs coach tests positive for coronavirus

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. โ€“ Denver Broncos running backs coach Curtis Modkins has tested positive for COVID-19 and wonโ€™t accompany the team on its trip to New England. โ€œWe will take all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of our team, opponents and community,โ€ the team added. On Friday, the Broncos held running back Melvin Gordon out of practice because of what coach Vic Fangio said was an illness unrelated to the coronavirus. The Patriots canceled practice Friday and later placed center James Ferentz on the reserve/COVID-19 list. On Saturday, the Broncos announced they had elevated defensive lineman Sylvester Williams to the active roster along with running back Jeremy Cox and linebacker Josh Watson.

The Patriots canceled practice Friday and later placed center James Ferentz on the reserve/COVID-19 list. He became the fifth player on the team to test positive for the virus. Newton missed New Englandโ€™s loss at Kansas City on Oct. 5 after his Oct. 2 positive test. Rookie defensive tackle Marlon Davidson was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday and a second person, who is not a player, subsequently tested positive. The Panthers have guard/center Tyler Larsen on the reserve/COVID-19 list, five days after he played against Atlanta.

Broncos coach: virus outbreak shows who the 'whiners are'

โ€œYeah, we compete like hell on Sundays to beat each other, but ultimately weโ€™re all in this thing together,โ€ Fangio said. The Broncos (1-3) were supposed to host the Chargers that week, and that game was moved up to Nov. 1, which was originally Denverโ€™s bye. So, the Broncos will have had a 17-day break between games and won't get another break all season. The Patriots wouldn't be nearly as inconvenienced, simply having to flip-flop their bye week with their game against Denver. โ€œWhat makes it harder for us compared to baseball is we canโ€™t go and play doubleheaders and we canโ€™t make a nine-inning game and seven-inning game,โ€ Fangio said.

(AP Photo/Isaac Brekken)LAS VEGAS โ€“ Two more NFL head coaches and their teams have been fined for not wearing masks on the sideline. A person with knowledge of the punishment said Tuesday that Jon Gruden of the Raiders and Sean Payton of the Saints were each fined $100,000 for not wearing masks on the sideline on Monday night. The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the league wasnโ€™t announcing specific fines, said the teams were also fined $250,000 for the infractions. NFL Network and ESPN first reported the fines for Gruden and Payton.

(AP Photo/Don Wright)NFL coaches thumbed their collective โ€” and exposed โ€” noses at the NFLโ€™s mask mandate in Week 2. More coaches and clubs can expect similar punishments as the memo last week from Troy Vincent, who oversees the leagueโ€™s football operations, was largely ignored throughout the weekend. Players, who, like the coaches, are subject to daily COVID-19 tests, are exempt from the face covering requirements. Some coaches such as Belichick, McDaniels and Steelers coach Mike Tomlin wore their masks or gaiters over their mouths but not noses. Others such as Carroll, Spagnuolo and Fangio wore their face coverings around their chins or necks, exposing both their mouths and noses.

(AP Photo/Don Wright)A person with knowledge of the punishment tells The Associated Press that at least three NFL head coaches have been fined $100,000 for violating the leagueโ€™s rules that they wear face coverings on the sideline. More fines could be coming as several other coaches violated the league's rules requiring coaches to wear coverings over their mouths and noses at all times. Gruden wore his face mask like a chin strap and Payton wore his gaiter like a turtleneck. The punishments come a week after the NFL warned all 32 teams in a memo about following the rules for wearing face coverings during the coronavirus pandemic lest they put the NFL season at risk. ___Follow Arnie Melendrez Stapleton on Twitter: https://twitter.com/arniestapleton___More AP NFL: https://apnews.com/NFL and https://twitter.com/AP_NFL

(AP Photo/Keith Srakocic)PITTSBURGH โ€“ A game seemingly in hand suddenly on the cusp of slipping away, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin didn't overthink things. Needing a stop to turn back the surprisingly resilient Denver Broncos, the Steelers dialed up one final blitz in an afternoon filled with them. So the Broncos (0-2) hung around despite losing starting quarterback Drew Lock (right shoulder) in the first quarter. The Steelers recovered and went downfield for a touchdown while Lock was in the blue medical tent getting evaluated. Still, he wasn't exactly thrilled on a day the Steelers never trailed but struggled to put the Broncos away.

Tennessee Titans kicker Stephen Gostkowski (3) celebrates his game winning field goal with teammates during the second half of an NFL football game against the Denver Broncos, Monday, Sept. 14, 2020, in Denver. The Denver Broncos coach was taken to task on television and social media for his late-game clock management Monday night after a 16-14 loss to Tennessee. Struggling kicker Stephen Gostkowski made a 25-yard field goal in the closing seconds after missing three attempts earlier in his Titans debut. One, their field goal kicker had obviously been having his problems. It would have put us in field goal range and given us a first down.

The Titans escaped Denver with a 16-14 victory Monday night on Gostkowskiโ€™s 25-yard field goal with 17 seconds left after heโ€™d missed four kicks, one in each quarter. Gostkowski missed three field goals: wide left, wide right and a block, and he missed an extra point. And Gostkowski became the first kicker to miss three field goals and a PAT in the same game since Mason Crosby missed four field goals and a PAT for the Packers against the Lions in 2018.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. A person with knowledge of the situation tells The Associated Press the Denver Broncos fear star linebacker Von Miller suffered a season-ending ankle injury toward the end of practice Tuesday. The person, speaking on condition of anonymity because the team hadn't addressed Miller's injury, said the team was awaiting results of an MRI on Miller. The practice took place indoors because of a snowstorm that struck the Rocky Mountains after a series of upper-90s and 100-degree days. Miller appeared primed for a big season after adding several pounds of muscle in the offseason and rededicating himself. The Broncos open the season Monday night against Tennessee.

Training camps have a different feel in this age of COVID-19

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. From the antimicrobial mist the Denver Broncos strolled through on their way to the practice fields to the hand-held whistles for masked-up coaches, NFL training camps have a very different look and feel this year. What it does is it really creates less of an opportunity for those guys to make our football team. Were going to have to find guys with the expanded practice squad, which we have spots for four veterans. Were going to have to find the right guys to be able to expand the practice squad with, Elway said. We have to appeal to their intelligence, their pride, their responsibility that, hey, this is different, Fangio said.

Elway joins call for change after George Lloyd's killing

Fangio's remarks came during a media call Tuesday after the team addressed the widespread demonstrations that were sparked by a white police officers killing of a handcuffed black man in Minnesota last week. Broncos safety Kareem Jackson spearheaded the effort, saying players needed to do more than tweet and talk about systemic racism, social injustice and police brutality. It isnt known if Elway will join the players at the state capitol. On Friday night, Elway tweeted that he spent much of the week listening to his players and coaches and realized his views he's held for decades were wrong. I realize I have a long way to go, but I will keep listening and learning, Elway added.

Broncos coach apologizes after suggesting NFL free of racism

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. Denver Broncos coach Vic Fangio is apologizing for suggesting discrimination and racism arent problems in the NFL. After reflecting on my comments yesterday and listening to the players this morning, I realize what I said regarding racism and discrimination in the NFL was wrong, Fangio said in an apology posted on the teams Twitter account Wednesday. While I have never personally experienced those terrible things first-hand during my 33 years in the NFL, I understand that many players, coaches and staff have different perspectives, Fangio added. Unfortunately, we dont live or work only within those confines, Fangio said. ___More AP NFL: https://apnews.com/NFL and https://twitter.com/AP_NFL

Fangio said society could learn a lot from an NFL locker room, where skin color is no barrier. I look forward to the Broncos and the NFL leading that charge, Fangio said.
