FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Fort Lauderdale's airport was evacuated for hours Thursday after officials feared a vehicle parked near two terminals might contain a bomb. The Broward Sheriff's Office said someone spotted “suspicious wires” in a vehicle parked outside Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport shortly after 1 a.m. The airport was evacuated and entry roads closed. The airport reopened at 7 a.m. and officials said operations were returning to normal, but numerous flights were delayed.

MIAMI – A graduate student from South Florida died this week in a horrific accident inside a parking garage in Columbus, Ohio, authorities said. (WPLG)According to the Columbus Police Department, the incident occurred shortly after 11:30 p.m. Monday. Police said she accidentally accelerated when she opened her car door and her vehicle collided with the payment kiosk, trapping her head between her car door and the exit toll booth. According to her Facebook page, Strauss was from Boca Raton and graduated from Florida Atlantic University, where she was on the dance team. Ohio State University released a statement to PEOPLE, saying Strauss was a graduate student in their College of Social Work when she was killed.

MIAMI – An Atlanta man was airlifted to the trauma center of Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami after he was bitten on the shoulder by a shark Sunday morning near Marathon, Monroe County sheriff’s deputies told WPLG-TV. Witnesses said Eddy was attacked almost immediately after entering the water near the Sombrero Key Light, about 50 miles north of Key West. While investigating the incident, the Sheriff’s Office received information from boaters that they had seen a bull shark in the area. The shark was described by witnesses as eight- to 10-feet long. Investigators said there was no fishing or chumming in the water near where the group was snorkeling.

WPLG-TV imageFORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Florida Forest Service on Tuesday tweeted that a wildfire in the Everglades had grown to 31,500 acres -- nearly the double the size it was on Monday -- and the blaze is only about a third contained. The wildfire is located about eight miles west of the city of Weston. Florida Forest Service officials confirmed lightning started the wildfire Sunday night just north of a busy stretch of Interstate 75 known as Alligator Alley and a few miles west of a state highway.
