CANCER CARE

Cancer survivors tell all: โ€˜I woke up from surgery missing a third of my right breastโ€™

For someone who has never had to experience or endure breast cancer, it might be understandable that there are questions involved. Does a diagnosis typically come as a surprise, or do people often suspect that something feels not quite right?

Why are breast self-exams so important?

As important as mammograms are in detecting breast cancer, self-exams are just as vital for early detection.

Could the Fasting Mimicking Diet help some breast cancer patients?

A different kind of fasting is the Fasting Mimicking Diet, or FMD, as the experts at Ackerman Cancer Center said. One in eight women in America will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, the numbers from the American Cancer Society show. And just last month, Nature Communications published research from a randomized phase 2 trial that analyzed the impact of FMD in breast cancer patients under chemotherapy. Researchers found that FMD can sensitize breast cancer cells to chemotherapy both at the clinical and pathological levels. โ€œInstead, fasting deprives proliferating cancer cells of nutrients, growth and other factors, which renders them more sensitive to cancer therapy and increases cell death."

Self-checks? Did you suspect it? How did you learn of your breast cancer?

Self-checks? Did you suspect it? How did you learn of your breast cancer?

We realize the questions above are quite personal. But weโ€™ll ask, for anyone who might be open to sharing: How did you learn of your breast cancer?

From a booming ninja warrior gym to a cancer diagnosis, after a hunch something wasnโ€™t right: One womanโ€™s story

In January 2019, Karen Madaras and her business partner took a leap of faith -- or a powerful, ninja-warrior-style athletic jump, to be more accurate: They opened a themed gym in the Memorial area of Houston.
