The Better Business Bureau has been receiving complaints from people skeptical about these cards, wondering if they’re part of a scam. They’re called Economic Impact Payment (EIP) cards and they’re loaded with your stimulus money. You can activate your EIP Card, set your four-digit PIN and check your balance by calling 1-800-240-8100. It’s worth noting that you don’t have to pay anyone to activate your EIP card, so if someone tells you to pay them, that is a scam. Finally, don’t accidentally throw your EIP card away.

Millions of Americans could lose stimulus payments to debt collectors

The $2.2 trillion congressional coronavirus relief plan passed in March did not shield the stimulus payments from certain private debt collectors, though it specifically protected the money from being taken to cover unpaid taxes or federal student loan payments. Some states and local governments -- including Massachusetts, Ohio, Illinois and Washington, DC -- have issued their own orders to shield the stimulus payments from private debt collectors. The stimulus payments are meant to provide emergency assistance during the coronavirus outbreak. She said many Americans may not know their bank account is at risk of seizure because they have not been served properly in a collection lawsuit. The stimulus payment should be deposited in the same bank account where you received your tax refund in either 2018 or 2019.

(CNN) – The first federal stimulus payments are on the way to America and one northwest Indiana man got quite the shock when he went to the ATM this weekend. Charles Calvin is a volunteer firefighter in New Chicago, Indiana, and unbeknownst to him, he received his first stimulus payment from the federal government on Friday. “I went to the ATM at the Family Express and once I withdrew $200 out of my account I looked at the available balance still left in my account,” he said. On Monday morning, Calvin called his bank and they said they didn't see that amount in his checking account anymore. However, they did note that his $1,700 stimulus payment was deposited.
