JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ€“ The Main Street Bridge (State Road 5) will reopen at noon on Friday after a weeklong bridge inspection and maintenance project that closed the bridge to pedestrians, drivers and cyclists.

The work was part of a larger rehabilitation effort to evaluate the bridgeโ€™s mechanical systems and structural health.

Crews conducted a LiDAR (Laser Imaging, Detection, and Ranging) scan, along with a full mechanical inspection of the bridgeโ€™s lift system. This includes the trunnion bearings โ€” large pivot points that act like the bridgeโ€™s โ€œshoulder joints,โ€ allowing it to open and close for vessel traffic.

โ€œThese parts wear down over time,โ€ FDOT said in a statement, โ€œand the data collected this week will help engineers plan a major trunnion replacement scheduled for early 2028.โ€

Vessels traveling beneath the Main Street Bridge were not impacted by the closure.
