ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – Multiple people were rescued from a retention pond on Sunday after their vehicle went into the water during a crash on I-95 in St. Johns County, firefighters said.
According to SJC Fire Rescue, around 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, firefighters responded to a two-vehicle crash on I-95 northbound near Mile Marker 305.

One of the vehicles ended up in a retention pond, and before emergency crews arrived, off-duty Engineer Charles Cook, along with several courageous bystanders, immediately sprang into action, firefighters said.
They quickly swam out to the vehicle and safely rescued the occupants from the water.
Once on scene, SJCFR crews provided patient care and managed the incident.
“We are incredibly proud of Engineer Cook’s selfless actions and thankful for the bystanders who didn’t hesitate to help. Their quick thinking and bravery made a difference when every second counted,” SJCFR wrote. “Great work by everyone involved.”
