Camden County wildfire that shut down I-95 for hours grows to 600 acres

CAMDEN COUNTY, Ga. – A wildfire near I-95 in Camden County has grown to about 600 acres and is about 15% contained Thursday morning after smoke billowing onto the highway forced officials to shut down the interstate for hours on Wednesday.

Crews are calling the fire, which has been registered by the National Interagency Fire Center, the “Camden McCarthy Overpass Fire.”

That smoke reduced visibility to zero on I-95 between Exit 14 and Exit 22 in Camden County for hours on Wednesday, but officials were able to reopen the highway Wednesday night.

Officials are asking drivers to proceed with caution and expect delays in the area.
