ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – The Florida Department of Transportation will soon begin construction of the Crossroads Trailhead, a multi-use path trailhead on the north side of State Road 207, located west of Vermont Heights.

The $1.1 million Crossroads Trailhead will feature a restroom facility, water fountains, picnic tables and a pedestrian bridge. The trailhead will serve as a bicyclist and pedestrian access point to the Palatka to St. Augustine State Trail -- State Road 207 Rail Trail.

The rail trail, constructed on abandoned rail lines, currently consists of approximately 15 miles of trail, stretching from East Palatka in Putnam County to I-95 in St. Johns County.

Construction of a $5.8 million, 4-mile segment from west of Hastings to Spuds will begin in September.

The multi-use, recreational trail along State Road 207 is a component of the St. Johns River-to-Sea Loop, a developing 260-mile trail within the larger trail network known as the East Coast Greenway, stretching from Florida to Maine.

MAER Homes of Jacksonville will start mobilizing for the project Thursday. It is scheduled for completion, weather permitting or barring any unforeseen circumstances, in spring 2018.

Bicyclists will have access to the adjacent rail trail during construction. Parking may be limited near the construction site.

Construction will occur Mondays through Fridays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. with occasional weekend work, if needed. No lane closures are anticipated on State Road 207.
