News4JAX+ at 10 a.m.: Parents' experiences of children's heart defect
This weekend, student athletes can get a free heart screening. They will need it if they have not had one and want to play sports in high school. A new law that takes effect July 1st requires all rising 9th graders to have an ECG test of their heart, which can identify if they have a heart defect that can lead to Deadly condition that causes sudden cardiac arrest. A heart defect in children is more common than you might think. Shawn Sima learned that when his 16-year-old daughter Lexi collapsed while running on a treadmill at the gym, when she was 16. And so did Jennifer and Christian Broadhurst their 17-year-old son collapsed while running in their Fleming Island neighborhood two years ago. All three join us this morning.
