The heat hit spectators at the Jaguars game so hard Sunday that over 100 people were treated by Jacksonville Fire Rescue for heat-related illness.
Temperatures at the stadium on the WeatherSTEM thermometer reached 90 degrees for two hours.
While this is just a couple of degrees warmer than an average September day, it pales in comparison with the heat this summer.
Heat like Sunday’s 90-degree day is very routine, to say the least. In fact, only two days in July and three in August did not reach 90. This year was especially unusual with Jacksonville seeing its first 90-degree day this year on March 27. That marked the eighth earliest on record for the city.
The National Weather Service issued eight separate Excessive Heat Warnings in August, the most on record, surpassing three issued in 2007. The month brought brutal heat with four consecutive 99-degree days as the humidity pared with temperatures to send feels like temps above 110°F.
In total 90 days have been reached so far this year but don’t count on many more as fall begins this weekend.
