Strong storms moving through Jacksonville and surrounding areas
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Parts of Northeast Florida are experiencing strong thunderstorms this evening. These storms are bringing gusty wind, hail, and locally heavy rainfall to the area. As the storms track from the southwest toward the northeast, areas like Middleburg, Oakleaf, Buckman Bridge, Ortega, and downtown Jacksonville are next in line for showers and rumbles of thunder.
Short-term forecast: more showers and storms ahead
Showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue into the evening, with heavy rain, gusty wind, and hail remaining the main threats for Jacksonville and the nearby counties. Forecasts show the potential for isolated tornadoes remains low, around 2 percent as quick, isolated spin-up tornadoes are possible as storms track from the southeast.
Another round of storms is forecast to begin as early as late morning on Friday near I-75 and move into Jacksonville through the afternoon. Rain chances will climb, with Friday looking like another busy weather day.
Weekend outlook: a break from the storms?
After a wet and stormy end to the week, Saturday morning may see a few lingering showers, but behind the front, expect cooler and more seasonable temperatures. The extended forecast points to a drier spell into the weekend and much of next week, with highs settling back into the upper 80s and low 90s. Rain chances are lower for several days after Friday, giving Jacksonville time to dry out and recover from the wet pattern.
