It’s a soup and stew kind of weekend as cold slams the Southeast

Marathon runners brace for extreme cold conditions

Sunday Lows (.)

Extreme Cold Weather, Freeze Warnings and Winter Advisories will be in effect starting Saturday.

For most of us, it is a soup-and-stew kind of weekend as we hunker down somewhere warm. For several hundred others, it will be a test of fortitude, and extra layers for the Donna Marathon.

An Extreme Cold Warning will be in effect for from 7 p.m. Saturday through 1 p.m. Sunday. A Freeze Warning, with Hard Freeze temperatures, will be in effect for the same time period.

. (.)

For the Extreme Cold Warning, dangerously cold wind chills as low as 6 degrees is possible. For the Freeze Warning, sub-freezing temperatures as low as 19 degrees is expected. This will cover the entire viewing area. For the Winter Weather Advisory, snow will be possible along the northern edge of our viewing area of SE GA, with total snow accumulation of less than 1/2 inch. Slow down and use caution while traveling. For the latest road conditions, call 5 1 1.

The dangerous wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. Dress in layers, including a hat, face mask and gloves if you are going to be outside for an extended period of time.

The wrap-around moisture and the rapidly chilling air from the deepening low-pressure area could lead to isolated snow showers, mainly over the open water, with some possibilities north of our area.

The strong wind will increase Saturday afternoon from the northwest winds at 20-40 mph, gusting to 50 mph. The strong wind continues on Sunday as temperatures continue below freezing.

Hard Freeze conditions are expected Monday and Tuesday morning.

A few showers will be possible as the front moves across our areas through around sunset tonight.

Tonight: Partly cloudy and chilly. Patchy frost possible in SE GA.

Saturday: Partly cloudy to partly sunny and windy. Morning lows in the 30s and 40s will climb to the 40s and 50s as the wind accelerates. The Extreme Cold Warning and Freeze Warning will start at 7 p.m. Northwest winds of 20-40 mph with gusts up to 50 mph will bring Wind Chill temperatures into the single digits and teens overnight.

Wind Chill (.)

SUNDAY: Extreme Cold and Freeze Warnings continue through 1 p.m. Wind chill temperatures in the single digits to teens through the afternoon. Lows in the teens to 20s. Afternoon highs in the 40s. Wind chill temperatures will feel closer to freezing even as we approach our afternoon highs.
