Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia wake up to another freezing morning. When will it warm up again?

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville started today at 32 degrees, and if you thought it felt even colder out there, you’re right — the wind is dropping that “feels like” temp all the way to 26. I even walked out in sandals this morning, because honestly, it’s just not what we expect in The Sunshine State.

A freeze warning is in effect for most of Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia. Areas like Waycross and Macclenny are sitting below freezing, with wind chills in the mid-20s. Greencoof Springs is in the same boat.

If you’re not a fan, I hear you! I’m right there with you.

Drought boosts fire risk

This cold snap isn’t our only problem. I’m tracking a higher-than-normal fire risk this week, thanks to a lingering drought and very low humidity. Our drought monitor puts much of the area in the red — and there’s not a lot of improvement in sight yet.

The wind is low for now — which is good news — but it’s expected to pick up a bit by 8 a.m. along the coast. Fire danger is definitely elevated while everything remains so dry out there. If you see smoke or flames, remember to snap a photo and send it to SnapJAX at news4jax.com/snapjax.

Warming up with rain on the way

Here’s the good news: this winter blast isn’t going to last. We’ll still have chilly lows tomorrow, but highs will bounce back into the 60s today and near 72 on Wednesday.

Starting Thursday, we’re looking at that Florida warmth again, climbing to 78 degrees and even hitting the 80s by Friday. And that’s not all. We’re expecting some much-needed rain between Thursday and Monday. That should help chip away at the drought and maybe ease the fire risk, so let’s cross our fingers for real, soaking showers.

Bundle up for chilly mornings, but don’t put away your summer gear yet — warmer (and wetter) weather is right around the corner!
