Extreme Drought expands as showers offer brief relief

Residents urged to conserve water amid severe shortage

As the Extreme Drought expands across our area, it’s a welcome treat to track a few showers and thunderstorms.

Slow moving showers and thunderstorms have developed along the Atlantic sea breeze. These are west of I-95, stretching from Duval County to Flagler County. They are slowly moving west-northwest and approaching the St. Johns River.

The slow progression inland will drag them into Clay and Putnam counties as they weaken and fade as they approach Highway 301 to I-75.

Patchy to areas of dense fog are expected to develop along our beaches and inland areas tonight and early Saturday.

The continuing onshore winds will result in elevated surf and an increasing risk of rip currents through the weekend.

Don’t forget that our clocks Spring forward this weekend. As you adjust the clocks it’s also a great time to inspect your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors.

Tonight: Showers will weaken after sunset. Patchy to areas of dense fog for coastal counties and inland areas.

Saturday: A foggy start will give way to mostly cloudy skies then becoming partly cloudy. Some coastal areas will have sea fog lingering through late morning, afternoon. Morning lows in the 60s. Afternoon highs in the 70s along our beaches, 80s inland. Wind SE 5-15 mph. Patchy to areas of dense fog overnight.

Sunday: Dense sea and inland fog will remains a concern. Warming with record to near record highs possible. Partly cloudy skies with a chance of showers and storms along the afternoon sea breeze, 20-30 percent. Moring lows in the 60s with highs in the 70s along the sandy shores and 80s inland.

The viewing area is now under an Extreme Drought and a Phase II Severe Water Shortage.

Landscape irrigation is limited to one day a week.
