Thunderstorm threat, strong wind gusts on tap for Sunday in Southeast Georgia, Northeast Florida

Sunday afternoon

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Before the storms even arrive, the heat will be the first challenge of the day. Temperatures are expected to climb into the mid-to-upper 90s across Southeast Georgia Sunday afternoon. While drier air will help keep things slightly more bearable there, heat index values are still expected to reach the upper 90s to low 100s.

Folks in Northeast Florida will see temperatures a few degrees lower, but don’t let that fool you. The moisture in the air will make it feel like anywhere from 100 to 106 degrees this afternoon.

Storm threat builds this afternoon

As the afternoon heats up, so does the storm threat. Scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop south of I-10 Sunday afternoon. By the evening hours, isolated strong to marginally severe storms could fire up across Southeast Georgia, with the potential for wind gusts of up to 60 mph.

Storm activity is expected to wind down by midnight, with dry conditions returning through the early morning hours Monday.

The week ahead

The stormy pattern doesn’t end with Sunday. Strong storms — with a few isolated severe storms possible — are expected Monday, followed by daily scattered to numerous afternoon thunderstorms through the rest of the week.
