I’m keeping an eye on two areas of low pressure in the Atlantic that could become tropical systems over the next several days.
One of the systems is already sitting southeast of Bermuda. The National Hurricane Center is giving it a 50% chance of developing over the next seven days.
That system is expected to move north to north northeast, so any tropical storm or depression that forms would likely be short lived and remain away from the Caribbean.
The second system is farther east and could be the one to watch more closely.
It is expected to move off the west coast of Africa today and then track west across the Atlantic at about 15 to 20 mph. The system has a 50% chance of development over the next 7 days.
It could become a tropical depression later this week as it continues west toward the Caribbean.
If it strengthens enough to become a named storm, it would be named Dolly.
The hurricane center is no longer watching a third area west of Portugal for possible tropical development.
For now, neither of the two systems poses an immediate threat to land. But forecasters will be watching both as they move across the Atlantic in the coming days.
