Record early voting period comes to close

Florida clergy, candidates make last early voting push on Sunday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – For most of Florida, two weeks of early voting ended Saturday, but voters in Duval and Bradford counties -- and select other counties across the state -- can vote on Sunday, and clergy are making one last push to get minority voters to the polls early this year.

"Souls to the Polls" rallies are taking place across Florida. The Rev. Jessie Jackson is joining local Democratic leaders and elected officials for a 10 a.m. rally at 5238 Norwood Ave. Vice President Joe Biden will appear Sunday with former Gov. Charlie Crist at Mt. Hermon AME Church in Fort Lauderdale to help generate excitement among black voters critical to the Democratic candidate's hope of returning to the governor's mansion.

Only about 41 percent of black and Latino citizens ages 18 and older came out to vote in the last midterm elections in 2010.

"It is our mission to remind all voters what's at stake and increase voter turnout during the last day of early voting and for the November 4th General Election," U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown, D-Jacksonville, said.

Republicans are also holding get-out-the-vote rallies across the state Monday. Gov. Rick Scott will campaign Sunday with former Gov. Jeb Bush, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie in Hialeah.

Polls consistently show the Florida governor's race tied or virtually tied, which means it will likely be won by whichever side does a better job turning out voters.

Nearly 3 million Floridians already have voted by mail or at early voting locations, more than half the number of people who cast ballots in the last race for governor four years ago. As of Saturday, 113,669 votes were already cast in Duval County -- just over 20 percent of all registered voters -- and the Sunday before the election is traditionally the busiest day of early voting.
