Jacksonville Beach street renamed to honor local African American leader who made history

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. – A street in Jacksonville Beach now has a new name in honor of a person who made history in the city.

The street sign is now a tribute to Margaret Ann McQueen, the first African American to be elected to the Jacksonville Beach City Council.

The street sign in her honor is at the intersection of Second Avenue South and Seventh Street South in Jax Beach.

A photo from the Beaches Museum shows Margeret Ann McQueen as she took the oath after she was elected to city council in 1991 to represent District 1.

McQueen, a University of North Florida alum, is from Jacksonville Beach and raised her children there.

McQueen, who was an elementary school teacher, is also known for leading the Jacksonville Beach Community Action Co-Op, which addressed issues within the city like crime.

She also helped build relationships between the people who lived in the city and police.

McQueen served on the Jacksonville Beach city council from 1991 to 1994 and then again in 1998

She died in 2013 at the age of 73.
