Lynchburg barbershop giving kids free haircuts during back to school event

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – It’s time again for children to say goodbye to summer break and hello to another year of school.

To make sure students are prepared to start the school year on the right foot, volunteers, organizations and others have organized back-to-school events. These events will feature free haircuts, backpacks, school supplies, vaccines, food, hygiene bags, physicals and more.

Duval County

Aug. 13 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. | First Coast Villains alongside Hair Mechanix is hosting its 3rd annual Back-to-School Bash on August 13 at Hair Mechanix Mandarin. The event will feature free haircuts and school supplies for children ages 5 to 18. Hotdogs, hamburgers, chips and drinks will also be available. NOTE: Free haircuts and school supplies will be first come, first served. Location: 11700 San Jose Blvd. #6, Jacksonville

August 13 from 9 a.m. - until | The City of Jacksonville is teaming up with UF Health to host a Back-to-School Food Giveaway on August 13 at UF Health Elizabeth G. Means Clinic | 1155 E. 21st. St. Jacksonville, FL 32206.

Event Highlights: Healthy Food - School Physicals - COVID-19 Vaccine info - School Supplies - Diapers (infant/adult) - Prizes *items while supplies last, no reservations

Aug. 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. | We are Hype, an organization dedicated to developing the lives of young people in our community, is hosting a back-to-school basketball camp and supply giveaway on Saturday, Aug. 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Legends Center at 5130 Soutel Dr., Jacksonville, FL 32208. Aug. 13 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. | First United Methodist Church of Downtown Jacksonville, REFRESH Youth Ministry and Duval Connect Magazine will host The Back To School Pop-Up Shop. The event will feature games, music, bounce houses, teacher-parent discussion, giveaways and more! Time: 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. Location: 225 E. Duval St., Jacksonville, FL 32202

Clay County

Aug. 1 - 12 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. | The Department of Health in Clay County will hold its annual Back to School Immunization Drive Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., August 1-12 at the Clay County Fairgrounds. Free vaccinations include measles, mumps, rubella, polio, chickenpox, and hepatitis B. Click here for more information.

Students under 18 must be accompanied by a legal guardian and have all current immunization records and a photo ID.

August 13 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. | Highlife Barber Beauty Salon is offering free haircuts on August 13 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Students from Pre-K to Seniors in High School may come and get a haircut. Location: 115 Woodside Dr, Orange Park, FL 32073

Until July 31 | Palms Medical Group is offering free sports physicals until the end of July at all of its locations. See the graphic below for more details.

Nassau County

August 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. | Blackrock Baptist Church Community is hosting a Summer Bash event that will feature water slides, Kona Ice, a petting zoo, free food and more! Location: 96362 Blackrock Rd, Yulee, FL 32097

The first day of school for Duval County students is Aug. 15. The first day of school for Nassau County students is Aug 10. The first day of school for St. Johns County students is Aug. 10. The first day of school for Clay County students is Aug. 10. The first day of school for Glynn County students is Aug. 9.
