Man arrested in Arlington shooting death

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 29-year-old Jacksonville man was arrested early Wednesday morning on a charge of murder and two counts of attempted murder in the shooting death of another man Tuesday night in Arlington.

Terrance Sopenasky is accused of killing 22-year-old Kenneth Jackson Jr., who was found shot to death in a truck before 7 p.m., placing the neighborhood on lockdown for hours.

Police said Sopenasky was angry that Jackson had been dating his sister. Investigators said they'd argued about it earlier in the evening, and Sopenasky challenged Jackson to come by his house on Cancun Drive.

Jackson picked up a couple friends and drove over in his pickup truck and passed by Sopenasky's house once as he stood in the driveway and beeped his horn, police said. They said the trio turned around in a cul-de-sac and came back, and as they passed a second time, Sopenasky (pictured below) started shooting.

Jackson was the only one hit by the gunfire, police said. They said his truck barreled through several mailboxes and struck a light pole, and he was dead at the wheel.

The other two men in the truck were OK.

"They blocked off my car and I was told I could not leave, there was a shooting and we would be questioned," said Venera Hatten, who works at a group home across the street from where the truck ended up. "Although, I told them I was in the house, didn't know anything, and they still said I needed to stay."

"Very majorly shocked," Hatten added. "This is a quiet neighborhood. We all know each other, basically, and this is not something that happens here all the time. I guess it could happen anywhere. The safest neighborhood is not safe."

Sopenasky made his first appearance in court Wednesday and was being held without bail. His arraignment is set for April 16.
