Garbage truck dumps burning trash on Butler Blvd.

Fire closed westbound lanes midday Monday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Westbound lanes of Butler Boulevard at Southside Boulevard were closed around midday Monday after a garbage truck dumped a load of trash that was on fire, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

State troopers said a Republic Services garbage truck was heading westbound on Butler about 11:30 a.m. when he saw a large amount of smoke coming from the cargo area.

Per company policy, the driver discharged the burning cargo onto the right shoulder of the roadway to prevent the fire from spreading to the truck.

After discharging the cargo, the vehicle moved safely away from the fire.

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department arrived on scene and extinguished the fire.

There were no reported injuries and no property damage.

The right lane of Butler was closed until about 4 p.m. as the garbage was cleared.
