Police: Man who just filed for divorce killed wife

Woman shot Saturday afternoon on Yellow Bluff Road died

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man who filed for divorce last Wednesday shot and killed his wife during a conversation at the front door of their Northside home on Saturday afternoon, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Richard Hereford, 60, is charged with murder in the shooting death of 51-year-old Kimberly Hereford.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, the husband fired two shots at his wife about 5 p.m. while they were talking at the door of the Yellow Bluff Road home. One shot missed, but the second killed her, according to police.

A stepson in the home at the time was not injured.

Police said Richard Hereford (pictured in JSO booking photo) drove to his sister's house after the murder, where he was arrested about 90 minutes later.

Police said they found a handgun when they located Hereford.

According to JSO Assistant Chief Chris Butler, the couple had agreed to seek a divorce, but he apparently filed court papers last week without her knowledge.

Richard Hereford does not have a criminal background. The only thing found in court records was a dissolution of marriage between Richard Hereford and his first wife, Vicki Hereford, in 2004.
