As a result of the crash, the cruiser jumped the curb, hitting a water main then striking a column on a building off Baymeadows Road, Washington said.
The 41-year-old officer was taken to Baptist Medical Center South with minor injuries.
At the time, the officer also had a 26-year-old woman, who was an intern from UNF, in the cruiser with him, Washington said. The woman was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
"Both were complaining of back injuries," Washington said.
Washington said the 41-year-old driver of the SUV and her 5-year-old daughter were not injured.
The driver was issued a citation for failure to yield at a stop sign, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Washington said that JEA turned off water temporarily to fix the water main break
"Looks like it was to a sprinkler system or back valve," Washington said.
Several lanes of Baymeadows Road were blocked during the investigation.
