Forestry officials, the Alachua County Sheriff's Office and multiple fire departments first responded just before 5 p.m. to battle the flames in the area of S.R. 26 and C.R. 234.

As crews worked to contain the fire, part of S.R. 26 was shut down.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the road reopened about 9:30 p.m., however, fire crews were still on scene.

Drivers were urged to use caution when traveling in the area because of low visibility due to the smoke. Troopers also reminded drivers to reduce their speed and use their low beam headlights.
