Man shot, killed in Biltmore, police say

Victim taken 3/4 mile to gas station for help after shooting on Amazon Ave.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man shot early Thursday while sitting in a black Toyota on Amazon Avenue died at the hospital, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Police said it's unclear why the suspect approached the car in the Biltmore area and began shooting.

Sgt. Marc Musser with JSO said that another person in the vehicle managed to drive away from the shooter and pull into a Texaco gas station less than a mile away, where they called police.

The victim was taken to UF Health where he died. Officers have not released his identity but believe he may be approximately 28 years old.

The driver was taken to police headquarters to speak with investigators, but the sheriff's office is not calling that person a suspect in the shooting.

Police investigated both the Amazon Avenue scene and the Texaco gas station on North Edgewood Avenue. The gas station was blocked off during the investigation, and the Toyota was taken into evidence.

Several neighbors who live in the Amazon Avenue area said they heard nearly 10 gunshots around 3 a.m. Thursday.

“My mother lives down here. I've got a niece and nephew down here,” Michael Caudill said. “With gunshots going off, they could have hit my house or my mother's house. They could hit anybody. An innocent life could have gone over nonsense like this going on. That's ridiculous.”

Another neighbor said that for a dead end road, the area sees a lot of traffic.

One man sad that he wasn't surprised that an incident like that happened there.

"This neighborhood is not the best at all," Jesse Martin said. "I've lived in here my whole life, and it's just an everyday thing. People see it and they just keep right on walking, because it's just what happens."

Police did not have any description of the shooter.
