Tips for staying safe in the heat
Health officials recommend the following precautions during extreme heat:
Stay cool
- Minimize outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If time outside is unavoidable, seek shade and take frequent breaks in cooler areas.
- Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing made from breathable fabrics such as cotton to help the body stay cool.
- Spend time in air-conditioned places — such as malls, libraries or community centers — to escape the heat.
- Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles. Temperatures inside parked cars can rise to dangerously high — and potentially fatal — levels quickly.
Stay hydrated
- Drink water throughout the day, even without feeling thirsty. Dehydration can occur rapidly in hot weather.
- Limit alcohol and caffeinated beverages, as both can accelerate dehydration. Remind family members and friends to drink water regularly.
