GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. – A man was killed and another was critically injured Thursday night when a train stuck a pickup truck on railroad tracks in Green Cove Springs, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
The Amtrak train collided with the pickup just after 7 p.m. at the railroad crossing on Cooks Lanes, just west of South Orange Avenue, FHP Lt. Tina Hall said.
Troopers said 38-year-old Caleb Osborne, 38, a passenger in the pickup died at the scene and Richard Tillman, 41, was taken to Orange Park Medical Center, where he was in critical condition.
Troopers said the Amtrak train, which had more than 200 people on board, was heading to New York at the time of the crash. No one on the train was injured.
According to FHP, it appeared the driver of the pickup truck tried to go around the crossing arms.
Since there are crossing arms and warning lights at the railroad track, one neighbor told News4Jax that it's very rare to hear about a problem at that crossing.
"It's really sad," Barbara Bullins said. "Even if they weren't paying the closest attention or being alert, there's always plenty of warning with the crossing arm and the signals."
FHP will be investigating, as well as the National Transportation Safety Board.
