JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man was taken into custody Thursday afternoon after a 71-year-old woman was found inside a Sandalwood home, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.
Officers responded about 4 p.m. to Majuro Drive, just south of Atlantic Boulevard, after receiving a call about a man covered in a "large amount of blood" walking in the street, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Police said they then spoke with the caller, who told them the man had entered a nearby home.
When officers went inside home to perform a welfare check, police said, they found a 71-year-old woman dead. Police said it's unknown how the woman died.
The man was then taken into custody and taken to the homicide office to be interviewed, investigators said.
Police said it appears the man and the woman knew each other.
Detectives are working to obtain a search warrant for the home, and the Sheriff's Office continues to investigate.
