JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A car barreled into the storefront of a Jacksonville grocery store Wednesday morning.
The crash was reported at the Winn-Dixie on West Sago Avenue off New Berlin Road in Oceanway about 10:30 a.m., store employees told News4Jax.
Employees said the driver, believed to be a woman in her 60s or 70s, was taken to a hospital. An officer at the scene told News4Jax that the woman might have had a medical issue.
A woman told News4Jax at the scene that the driver is her friend, who recently started working a new overnight shift. She said her friend was taken to the hospital as a precaution but that she’s doing OK.
It's possible the car set off the sliding door sensors at the store, because it appeared no glass was broken.
The car has since been removed, according to employees, who said the business remains open.
Joe Caldwell, corporate communications manager for Winn-Dixie parent company Southeastern Grocers, released a statement about the incident:
"We are taking this matter very seriously and are grateful that neither customers nor associates were injured in this incident. We are fully cooperating with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office on this active investigation and defer any updates to them while details are still being determined.”
