2nd man dies after Saturday shooting outside Moncrief store

Jacksonville police found 40 shell casings at scene

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A double shooting Saturday evening near the intersection of 28th and Stuart streets has taken a second life, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.

Dorian Brown, 27, was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Darnell Dues, 30, was hospitalized at UF Health, but police announced Monday that he died of his injuries.

Homicide detectives said multiple guns were involved in the 6:20 p.m. shooting near that intersection. Evidence technicians found 40 shell casings in the area.

Police did not have any information about the shooters and were not sure if it was a drive-by shooting, but that's how Brown's aunt, Marva Hilliard, described it.

"He was coming to visit his mom and visit his neighbors and there's a store, a corner store he always visits, says hello to all the neighbors and there's some kind of confrontation between another guy," Hilliard told News4Jax. "Gunfire then erupted from a car, and he was left on the streets to die."

Hilliard said Brown had three children. He would have turned 28 on Tuesday.

She said Brown had stopped by a convenience store when he was shot.

“Another senseless murder has gone down in the streets of Jacksonville. There are no good answers,” Hilliard said.

Investigators said there were reports of cars leaving the area after the shooting, but they had no description.

“It's time to stop the violence. I see it every day on the news,” Hilliard said. “People need to control their homes. Go in their children's rooms. If they're not paying rent, they're living there rent-free. Go in their rooms, in the drawers, under the mattress, in their cars, in the glove box, in their trunk, and find the guns and turn them in.”
