PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – One man died and a second was injured when a Ferrari convertible crashed and overturned early Sunday in Ponte Vedra Beach, according to the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office.
It happened about 12:20 a.m. Sunday on Ponte Vedra Boulevard near Sawgrass Drive East.
According to a crash report, two men from Tennessee were headed north in the 2019 two-door Ferrari Portofino when it crossed over the southbound lane and hit a curb, causing the driver to lose control. The crash report states the car then struck a power pole and a utility box before hitting multiple trees.
Deputies said both men, neither of whom were wearing a seat belt, were ejected. Deputies don't know which victim was driving.
James Richardson, 42, was taken to Beaches Baptist, where he died. The other man, who is 41 years old, was taken to Memorial Hospital with significant injuries.
The Sheriff's Office said the car was owned by a Ponte Vedra Beach man. The Sheriff's Office said the owner let the men take the $200,000 car for a spin. News4Jax could not reach the owner for comment.
Debris could still be seen Tuesday from the crash, which happened near Patty Hill's home.
“On my way to church, I could tell something was going on because the police vehicles were there and some other construction vehicles," Hill said. “First thing you think about is what happened to the people.”
Investigators are looking into whether speed was a factor in the crash. A 2019 Ferrari Portofino can go from 0 mph to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds.
