Humpback whale spotted off Ponte Vedra Beach

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Cool view! A News4JAX viewer shared a sighting of a Humpback whale surfacing from the water.

Eric Shoultz was walking along the shore on Ponda Vedra Beach just south of Mickler’s Beach when the whale surfaced and blew out water.

Florida Fish and Wildlife confirmed that Shoultz saw a Humpback whale feeding, according to the video. This is a different species from the right whales that come down from the north to have their calves.

The last worldwide population estimate was around 184,000 humpback whales. There are 14 separate population groups and one is threatened while four others are endangered.
