Jury awards $500,000 in wrongful termination suit

Ratliff fired in 2007 over email

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Duval County jury awarded a former professor at Jacksonville University $500,000 in a wrongful termination suit.

Dennis Ratliff, a former tenured accounting professor, was fired in May of 2007 for sending an e-mail that was critical of the Dean of the College of Business, Jan Duggar.

During the five day trial, Ratliff argued that the university didn't follow its by-laws regarding terminating tenured faculty members.

JU argued that Ratliff was terminated because he continuously complained about violations of various university rules, including the changing of the grades of one of his students.
