Police: Woman stabs child, then herself in Arlington home

Young girl dies at hospital; woman in critical but stable condition

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A woman and child were found stabbed in a home on New Haven Road in Arlington about noon Wednesday. By late afternoon, a Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office homicide detective announced that the young girl died at a hospital and the woman is in critical condition.

Police said it appears the woman stabbed the child under 8 years old multiple times with a kitchen knife, then stabbed herself. A total of six people were in the house at the time -- one of whom was a slightly older child who was not hurt and is now in the care of the Florida Department of Children and Families.

Police were notified when someone in the house called 911. The detective said he had no knowledge of previous domestic calls at that address.

Police wouldn’t say how or if the adult and the girl she stabbed were related.

The home, on a street off Terry Parker Drive South, was surrounded by police all afternoon.

A woman who lives in the neighborhood was surprised to see a crime scene near her.

“I let my kids play here. We’ve got a basketball hoop out front. We know most of the neighbors in the neighborhood,” Casandra Shuman said. “Generally speaking, this is a really quiet neighborhood (with) much older people.”

Police did not reveal a motive. No one involved was identified.
