FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. – Mattie, an elderly and blind Jack Russel Terrier, is spending the holidays happy with her humans after she went missing for several hours Saturday afternoon.

In a news release Thursday, a spokesperson for Flagler County Fire Rescue described the search and rescue effort that might have just save Mattie’s life.

It started when Mattie’s owners, Mr. and Mrs. Burke, were out for a walk with the her. Mattie wandered off unbeknownst to the Burkes. They spent hours looking for her until finally calling Animal Control.

Animal Control Officers spotted Mattie stuck in the mud 20-feetown from a sheer drop along the water’s edge of the Intracoastal Waterway. That’s when a crew from Flagler County Fire Rescue was called in to help.

“Firefighter Houston and the dog were picked-up in the canoe by the rescue crew who then paddled 50-yards back to a floating dock into safety. The dog was delivered onto the dock and walked unassisted to the Animal Control Officer,” Lieutenant Mike Pius said.

Responders aren’t sure how long Mattie was stuck, but said she remained calm during the rescue and is remarkably unharmed.
