Lightning strikes multiple homes, transformers, sparks fire in Clay County woods

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. – Lightning hit multiple homes, power transformers and sparked a fire in a wooded area in Clay County on Wednesday night as storms moved through the area.

Here’s a breakdown of what has been reported so far, according to Clay County Fire Rescue:

  • House hit by lightning on Azalea Fields Court. No smoke and no fire, just a burning smell
  • House hit by lightning on Claremont Drive. Again, no smoke, no fire, just a burning smell
  • Woods fire from lightning in the 4500 block of County Road 218. There was no estimate on the size of the fire. Crews were just arriving on the scene around 9:30 p.m.
  • Transformer fires on Moody Avenue and Blanding Boulevard. Clay Electric is aware.

About 1,500 Clay Electric customers were without power as of 9:45 p.m., according to an outage map.

No injuries have been reported.
