2 sales tax holidays that began this weekend can help you save on big-ticket appliances

FLORIDA – Saturday marked the start of two sales tax holidays that allow people to save big on household appliances.

Washers, dryers, gas ranges and cooktops and even refrigerators are big-ticket items that are eligible for tax-free savings.

Under the Energy Star Sales Tax Holiday, washing machines, clothes dryers and water heaters worth $1,500 or less are exempt from tax for the next. Refrigerators or combination fridges and freezers costing up to $4,500 are also included.

A separate sales tax holiday is also in effect for gas ranges and cooktops after Gov. Ron DeSantis pushed for a permanent sale tax exemption on gas stoves in Florida. This came after a federal official raised the possibility of banning gas stoves. As of now, the federal government said it has no plans to put a ban like that in place.

Items that apply in the year-long sales tax holiday include any range or cooktop fueled by:

  • Butane
  • Liquefied petroleum gas
  • Natural gas
  • Propane and other flammable gas

There are also other ways shoppers can save money.

The Back to School sales tax holiday runs from July 24 to Aug. 6, and the Freedom Summer sales tax holiday runs through Sept. 4 for recreational items.

The Disaster Preparedness sales tax holiday starts again on Aug. 26.
