Naval Station Mayport holds 9/11 ceremony in honor of the 3,000 killed during terrorist attacks

Monday marks 22 years since 9/11

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Naval Station Mayport Sailors and firefighters held a 9/11 ceremony Monday at the base headquarters in honor of the 3,000 killed during terrorist attacks that took place the morning of September 11, 2001.

The base staged fire trucks and police vehicles in front of the headquarters and raised the American flag at 8 a.m. There was a bell ringing and a moment of silence. They also prayed for the memory of those who lost their lives.

“Never forget. 22 years ago. For some of us, that’s a lifetime. Literally. For many of us, it was like yesterday. So how do we truly never forget? Why do we hold this remembrance? To bring back pain? No. It’s to focus on all the good that came out of it. We remember how this nation came together,” said Brian Binder, Commanding Officer Naval Station Mayport.

There was also a call to action to teach those who either were too young to remember what happened that day or weren’t even born. A Commanding Officer spoke about the importance of the ceremony and the duties Naval Station Mayport sailors perform daily.

Monday marks the 22nd anniversary of the attacks.
